Nellie was such a fun protagonist! I’m a sucker for empowered women in historical or period romances. While this book wasn’t bad by any means, I was a little let down by the end of it. I read the second and third book of this series (after some of my bookish friends told me to skip the first book) and LOVED them! Both The Lady Gets Lucky and The Bride Goes Rogue were spectacular reads, and I highly recommend if you want a fast-paced, steamy, Gilded Age romance. Going into this book, my expectations were pretty high. Having caught a glimpse of the real man underneath the title and societal obligations, Nellie wants to have her cake and eat it too, but will Lockwood be able to put this siren out of his mind, or will he sacrifice everything for love? Vowing never to marry or have children of her own, Nellie and Lockwood find themselves attracted to each other against their better judgements. Nellie, on the other hand, couldn’t care less about living up to others’ expectations- in fact, she gave up trying to be the perfect prim and proper lady years ago, reputation be damned. He can’t afford any more scandals in his life with his floundering estate, empty coffers, and his mother’s pressure to produce an heir weighing on him daily, never mind the troubling secret Lockwood is hiding that won’t allow him a moment’s peace. The Duke of Lockwood has had terrible luck finding an heiress to marry, and time is running out. Joanna Shupe’s fourth instalment in The Fifth Avenue Rebels series, The Duke Gets Even, is set in NYC during the Gilded Age and follows Nellie and the Duke of Lockwood. The chemistry, steam, and banter was 🔥🔥, though. However, I did find there was a bit too much angst/drama for me. I loooooved the first half of this book and the chemistry between Nellie and Lockwood. “Well, fair warning, I can make it because I am a woman. It’s temperamental but has a mind of its own.
